Though the ground floor bar may give the impression that only a few have discovered this gem, the downstairs dining room, both rustic and refined, reveals that La Spighetta has a loyal fanbase and they are enjoying themselves. At the heart of the room is a wood-fired pizza oven, but there are also many sophisticated, high-aiming dishes on the Italian menu. Try starter of tuna and swordfish carpaccio with celery and lemon dressing, pasta course of homemade Sardinian ravioli with potato, pecorino cheese and tomato sauce, main course of veal paillard with sauteed spinach, and dessert of rum- and vanilla-poached pears with cinnamon ice cream. Deeply Italian wine list.

La Spighetta is set in a very cool neighbourhood, just off the Marylebone High Street, a welcoming, relaxed haven within easy reach of Madame Tussaud's and the Oxford Street madness. This is a smart-casual Italian restaurant with a fiery pizza oven at its heart. No private room but you'll find your group well-accommodated in the downstairs dining room with its rustic decor and white table cloths. Dishes include starter of grilled scallops with rocket salad and lemon dressing, main course of terrific pizzas or something like char-grilled sardines with herbs and Sardinian couscous salad, and dessert of tiramisu. Parties of family and friends would find this place a delight.
