For a traditional, high-end London dining experience, The Old Masters is up there with the best. The Rubens at The Palace, the luxurious hotel it's part of, was built in 1912 as a hostel for debutantes coming out at Buckingham Palace down the road. The restaurant itself is set out like a traditional carvery grill with ornate high ceilings, chandeliers, the works. Fresh roasts are on the menu every day. Amongst the most famed dishes is the excellent Aberdeen Angus beef roast. Salads, fish and vegetarian dishes are also on the menu. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the breakfasts, we hear, are rather splendid. Live piano music most evenings. Good, welcoming service.

The restaurant proper has 170 covers (250 standing). Of three private rooms, the smallest is the Rembrandt with a 20 – 50 capacity. The Van Dyke Suite takes 25 to 150, while the Jubilee room suits groups of 20 to 80. Wide selection of menus, from a la carte to drink via fork buffet. Ample selection of vegetarian dishes. BYO; corkage £12 a bottle. Pre and post meal drinks can be enjoyed in the well-stocked Cavalry Bar. Live music, but you have the option of organising your own entertainment. Facilities include a PA system, ISDN line, projection screen and wi-fi. Children welcome; highchair and separate menu provided.
