At home in trendy Clerkenwell, Essence is a marvel – a modern restaurant and DJ bar serving very tasty tapas. Large windows framing the street provide the backdrop for the large leather sofas and bar stools on the airy ground floor. Downstairs is more sparsely furnished to make room to groove the night away. Rather than using rich sauces and complicated dishes, head chef Ana Serrano Merino, previously at Fino, focuses on healthy grilling of the quality ingredients delivered directly from Espana. Menu highlights include roasted marinated Iberian pork, Scallops with julienne mange tout and grilled confit artichokes with Manchego cheese. (Tip: arrive wearing a loose waistband!). A late license kicks in on Thursday and lasts ‘til Sunday. No wonder Essence has attracted such a strong following.



Essence is available for private hire by individuals, corporate clients and party organisers. You can hire the whole two floors (maximum capacity 300 standing), or just one. On the ground floor, you can reserve tables or seating areas. With its separate bar, DJ decks and seating, downstairs is great for groups of up to 100, especially if you want to hire a DJ or bring your own. Essence regularly collaborates with party organisers to host a variety of parties and DJ nights. A la carte, buffet, canapé and drinks menus are available. Vegetarians are well catered for. As are those that, given the opportunity, like a mighty fine time! Wine starts at £12.90 a bottle, cocktails at £5.90.
