Mediterranean Kitchen is refreshingly free of gawdy wall paintings, and 'decorative' empty chianti bottles. Such clichés won't do for a restaurant that understands the way to a foodies heart is through her stomach. Happily, it has a fine eye for aesthetics too. A charming host leads you to your wooden candlelit table, where you'll find yourself amongst a typical central London mix of business people, theatre goers, tourists and shoppers. Matching the rustic tables is a largely rustic menu of fresh, simple ingredients such as lamb steak with patatas bravas, or a particular favourite, the house steak burger. Presentation is chintz-free. Everything looks good enough to eat, as opposed to good enough to appear in an art exhibition. Not that hungry? Cast your eye over the light meals selection. Several wines sell by the glass as well as by the bottle. A really nice restaurant for a quality bite to eat before or after the theatre.

Mediterranean Kitchen's layout lends itself well to groups of all sizes, including parties of a hundred people, the maximum the restaurant can cater for. In a group of four? Ask for table 41. It's the best. If you're any more then ask for any of the tables in their 30s. However, if you're 30 or less and would rather the privacy of your own cosy space, there's a lovely basement with a candle-lit fireplace. To its right is a table for ten, and on the left, banquette seating alongside an open section of wooden floor just made for dancing on. Set menus cost £20 and £30 per head, plus wine. Children are welcome, and can choose from their own menu.
