Set in Soho just off Soho Square, Tartufo is a superb Italian restaurant that hits every note on the scale. The decor is modern neutral and doesn't call attention to itself, so you know the owners have saved their money out front and spent it on the kitchen. It's a lively little place where flavour and authenticity matter above all. The ingredients are fresh as the morning, the bread is baked there daily, and the mostly Italian wine list is spot on. Try starter of rustic Italian pie with tomato sauce, main course of marinated venison with mushrooms and polenta, and pud of whatever you like. We like tiramisu. Like everything else here, it was exactly right.

Not grungy, not swanky, not anything at all except first-rate, Tartufo is a self-effacing, smart little Italian restaurant that will make your guests feel welcome. The authentic and superb Italian menu features some classic dishes, plus some terrific new inventions. Try starter of classic antipasto misto to share around, then follow it with panfried scallops with leek and pancetta with a butter and basil sauce, then complete the act with tiramisu. The front section can seat up to 25 while the back area can be made slightly more private and seats up to 40. Fish dishes are a speciality, as is Italian wine.
