And about time, too, we say. Super-starry and super-glamorous chef Christophe Novelli is making his London haunt the lower floor of the elegant London Capital Club, open to non-members in the evenings. The gorgeous Grade-II listed club building has been beautifully restored, but Novelli in the City is more relaxed smart brasserie than stuffy fine dining. The floor is wooden and there are ochre and leather details. Try starter of roast scallops and spiced French black pudding with crushed herbs, horseradish cream and dried apple, main course of slow-cooked Somerset pork belly with curry cream mussels, hollandaise and sweet potato mash. The terrific wine list is entirely available by the glass. A welcome return to the Capital and a fitting setting for the chef's renowned cooking.

Formerly The Gresham Club, this modern example of London clubland is a short walk from all the big names in the City, and enjoys the ministrations of the wonderful Jean-Christophe Novelli. There are many rooms to book for private events that would be right for meetings, celebrations, conferences, and banquets, and the club offers absolutely everything required to make your event a success. The Gresham (up to 15 seated) and Wren (up to 8 seated) are traditionally panelled with chandelier and fireplace, the Board Room (up to 20) is a deluxe barrel-vaulted, mahogany-panelled affair, while the Marco Polo (up to 10) is conveniently sited adjacent to the Oriental (up to 50) with its scarlet drapes and classic detailing. Within the Novelli restaurant itself, small dining groups (up to 12) can be accommodated. Menus include starter of crayfish tail Caesar salad with bacon and Parmesan crisp, main course of roasted loin of venison with redcurrant and pepper sauce and new potatoes, and pud of pecan pie with whisky cream.
