Part of the four-diamond Royal Oxford Hotel in, funnily enough, Oxford, Smollensky's provides a luxurious fine dining experience. Large glassy areas at both the front and back literally throw light on the subject during the day; while at night, artificial lighting creates a cosy atmosphere. Relaxing in the luxurious leather furniture, you can admire the chefs at work in theopen-plan island at the centre of the room. The largely British menu - largely sourced from local farms - is based around the grill where most of it is prepared. If you don't want grilled food, never fear - there's also a decent choice of fish (e.g orange marinaded monkfish with romano tomatoes,courgette, crispy spring onions dressed with saffron and lemon), vegetarian eg. (bruschetta of goat's cheese with fresh figs and walnut dressing) and more European dishes to choose from.

An irregular shape, Smollensky's seems almost tailor-built for comfortably large-ish groups of 20 and 30 in a way that doesn't impose on other diners. At Christmas, for around £28 per person you can enjoy a full menu of traditional delights or perhaps try something a little different. Then onceit's January and the holly's wilted, groups can choose from menus designed specifically for larger parties such as a pre-theatre menus and an express business lunch menu. Perhaps you'd like to hire the venue exclusively, which of course you can for wedding receptions, birthday parties etc., of up to 130 seated. If you're a local resident, business professional or a studentwith visiting family you wish to please, you'll be in good company at Smollensky's.
