Add some smartmodern touches like funky chandeliers and a changing array of up-to-the-minute artwork. Put someone in the kitchen who knows their way around a cooker, say someone ex-Conran, and let them devise a menu of honest, flavoursome dishes that aim neither too low or too high. Get real ales pumping round the place with some guest ales just to keep the regulars on their toes. Chalk up an affordable wine list. Then locate the wholepackage in Islington and - voila! - The Barnsbury. The atmosphere is smart and relaxed, and so are the clientele. Try starter of slow-roasted plum tomato tart with cumin jam, main course if fillet of salmon with pesto crust and lemon and dill butter sauce, and pud of panna cotta withcaramelised oranges. The prices are right, too.

Your group of friends probably already gathers at The Barnsbury, so why not choose it for your birthday bash or Christmas blowout or even smart casual launch or business event? No private room, but if there were, you'd miss the crackling fires and the general air of relaxed enjoyment that seems to prevail. You could, of course, hire the whole venue, seating up to 70 orserving up to 120 standing. Set menus include things like starter of Frenchonion soup, main course of pan fried duck breast with warm beetroot salad and apple and pear tart. Moderately priced wine list and real ales are a definite bonus, and the service is blistering.
