Matsuri High Holborn brings the skill and prestige of Matsuri St. James's, one of London's oldest and most respected Japanese restaurants, to an all-together cooler setting bordering the City. Huge glass windows, clean lines and lots of wood make for a contemporary, comfortable and invitingatmosphere, offering healthy authentic Japanese dishes from sushi (theirspeciality) to tepanyaki (food grilled on a hot plate) served by friendly and knowledgeable Oriental staff dressed in rustic grey and black uniforms. You enter next to the funky bar area (tip: order a Kikkoman Royal. Plum wine with champagne, it is the Japanese version of Kir Royale), to the right of which is a sushi counter, while behind is the main restaurant area fromwhich you can peer at the team of enthusiastic and highly skilled chefs hardat work. Many of the 30+ -year-old local business people who come here often do so twice a week, the experience is that good. Best seat in the house? Ask for a bench at the far end from the entrance.

Business lunchers like the small sushi counter where you order your meal bypointing at it through the glass cabinet between you and the chef who then prepares it in front of you. Feel free to try before you buy. The counter can be hired alone or with the main restaurant. For total privacy, make your way down the light wooden stairs where there's a cosy cream-walled privateroom (fitting ten max.) with a butler call. For a truly personalised private dining experience that's a cut above the rest, try the tepanyaki room where small groups sit around their food as it is grilled fresh on the hotplate by their own chef. Steaks, veg, fried rice, even ice cream (honest. Ask for aFireball dessert) are cooked to perfection literally beneath your nose. The room fits 50 standing with a buffet.
