Everybody was glued to the telly when the documentary series about Jamie Oliver's brave and inspired Fifteen came on. Yes, the cheeky chappie chef turns out to have a heart as big as a limo and the courage to put himself on the line. He took fifteen disadvantaged young wannabe chefs and trainedthem, in spite of their inexperience and general unfamiliarity of the concept of showing up for work on time, or even showing up at all. He mortgaged his house to gain the Fifteen premises and do it up. We all bitour nails, longing for it to all come right...and it absolutely has. Fifteen is one of the most celebrated restaurants on the scene. In a warehousey part of town, you enter at bar level, and avail yourself of theexcellent concoctions. Then head downstairs to the smart, funky dining room where the welcome is genuinely warm. You can oversee the staff as the kitchen is entirely open! The tone of the menu is unadulterated Jamie, with dishes like 'kinda sashimi' or Xmas salad with my mate Mauro's home-curedsmoke bresaola, clementine, dandelion, rocket, mint, parmesan and 12-year-old balsamic. The menu does change, but you'll probably find the very popular organic fillet of McDuff beef hung for four weeks, poached in wine, served with smashed celeriac and New Forest mushrooms. A new fifteen trainees will enter the programme every year. Profits go to JO's charity.
