With its Art Deco lighting, signed celebrity photographs, and walls that look as if they've been marinating in the smoke of a million Gitanes, Elena's Etoile is la vie francaise in the middle of mad old Soho. Elena herself makes the rounds to be sure you're being cared for. The menu includes retro dishes like starter of parfait chicken liver and foie gras with Armagnac and mains of grilled entrecote with sauce bearnaise and chips, as well as more recent dishes like crispy duck with soy dressing and pickled ginger starter and roast seabass with spinach and prawn and lemongrass bisque. Puds are classic, wines areaffordable and service is French formal. Here's looking at you, kid.

A fee of £10 per person will be charged for a cancellation within 24 hours or a no show
