About
Once the centre of naval intelligence and operations in Britain - and therefore the world - Somerset House is now centre of skating, fine art-ogling, and very fine dining indeed. The Admiralty Restaurant ignores its possible views of the the merely freshwater Thames to attend to the serious pleasures of eating divine Modern British cuisine. Besides, you might not have been able to tear your eyes from the galleon-shaped chandeliers or the wall-mounted croc in the terra-cotta room. What's cooking? Deft haute cuisine. Menus change, but we've had amazing steamed halibut and sesame cabbage with salmon Gravadlax sauce to begin and the loin of venison, glazed apple, parsnip puree with juniper and bay leaf jus for mains is delicious, but you could confidently order from any corner of the menu. The house wine is kindly priced and worth the money, while the rest of the wine list is as soaring as the ceilings and just as delightful.
The grand and gorgeous surroundings of Somerset House and the fabulous Modern British menu will inspire you to push the boat out - and sail away! Since Admiralty opened, it has become a destination restaurant for connoisseurs of top-flight cuisine, with all the complexity of flavour and dedication to detail such cooking demands. The lofty dining rooms are elegant, with galleon-shaped crystal chandeliers, stuff reptiles, and statues of seafarers, as befits this lovely building. There are three private dining areas: the Bar area, the quite intimate Green Room and the larger Orange Room, or you could hire the whole restaurant. What's cooking? Various indulgent menus include starter of white onion soup with warm mackerel confit toast and hot smoked salmon on a celeriac and apple remoulade, main of roast fillet of lamb, turnip and prune gratin, with tarragon gravy, followed by pud of chocolate and banana bread pudding and warm chocolate sauce, further followed by petits fours and terrific coffee. Vegetarian menu available. Blistering wine list.
