You'd be forgiven for not jumping out of your seat with excitement reading the words American restaurant, but after a meal at Christopher's that's rather likely to change. From the moment you step off The Strand, straight on a few steps and into the high-ceilinged grandeur of this listed Victorian building you sense that eating here is an occasion. Ascend the stone spiralstaircase and you enter the sophisticated silk-panelled restaurant overlooking Waterloo Bridge. Set on the first-floor above the noisy hoi polloi, Christopher's exclusive loftiness suits its professional, cash-rich clientele who are clearly used to the finer things in life. Based on theGrand Steak and Lobster restaurants popular across the pond, the menu serves the best the US has to offer, with an English twist. The Maryland crab cake starter is probably the best you've ever tasted, so you can imagine how good the steaks and NY cheescake taste. Christopher's never double book, so the table's yours for as long as you want it. Which says is it all, really.

Sex and the City fans, start living the dream at Christopher's! All dark wood, tan leather sofas, hanging orb lamps and fashionable cocktails, the ground floor bar is as hip as any New York hang out cool enough for Carrie and her gang. Complementing the drinks and décor is a slickly-served good value menu of traditional house favourites. When you need peace and quiet, away from it all on the lower ground floor is a self-contained private dining room. A dual-purpose space, it offers total privacy for a formalbreakfast, lunch or dinner, and intimacy for an important occasion with loves ones. A rareity, groups of up to 20 can choose from a reduced a la carte menu, as well as a comprehensive set of menus to suit most tastes. For larger parties, there's always the main restaurant area which can betransformed into whatever kind of space you need, for example - a sit-down meal with a dance floor. Nothing is set in stone at Christopher's, so whatever your requirements, do discuss them.
